Steve Rooney and Duffy Moon met at KFMB radio in San Diego, California, in 1992. They worked together in various roles within the company for almost a decade, before branching out individually for a short time. Rooney had stints as a morning host and program director, as well as selling radio automation equipment. Moon enjoyed production director roles, as well as on-air and marketing positions. But, their fast friendship brought them back together in late 2001 when Steve called Duffy and asked, “hey, you wanna go buy a radio station?”
They actually wound up with four stations in Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. Rooney and Moon brought their idea of major market programming, production, and promotion to small market radio in September of 2002. A few weeks later, they began their on-air legacy with the “Rooney and Moon Morning Showgram”. The pair spent over a decade on air together, but that was only a small element in the overall success of Rooney Moon Broadcasting.
They both believed that a strong focus on local content was the fundamental goal that any small market radio group should focus on. And they did just that. Building Rooney Moon Broadcasting into the most highly awarded radio group in the state of New Mexico. Earning countless awards, pioneering countless programs, and always staying at the forefront of “what’s next”. Rooney Moon Broadcasting was first on the High Plains to offer highly interactive websites. First to offer interactive apps. First to build an unparalleled social presence. First to offer engaging, entertaining podcasts. And first to champion local programs like Secret Santa, Smoke on the Water, Family Fun Day, and Draggin’ Main.
In December, 2016, Rooney Moon Broadcasting lost one of it’s founding members, Steve Rooney. Best friend and business partner, Duffy Moon, continues the legacy today. Hyper local, forward thinking, and entertaining strategies continue to keep Rooney Moon Broadcasting at the forefront of media and marketing on the High Plains.

Rooney Moon Broadcasting is located on the High Plains of Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. We were formed in 2002 when Steve Rooney and Duffy Moon acquired three radio stations in Portales and Clovis, New Mexico. Shortly thereafter, they put a fourth radio station on the air and started changing the media landscape on the High Plains.
Rooney Moon Broadcasting has grown to be the largest media outlet on the High Plains of Eastern New Mexico, operating Mix 107.5, 105.9 KSEL Country, Big 1015, and AM1450 Cow Country. Our company began evolving to the digital age back in 2003, with the launch of fully interactive websites. We’ve since added mobile apps, podcasting, and a social media reach unmatched in the market.
